Basic rules for living with dog

With our attitude, we are constantly sending messages to our dogs. Out of ignorance, we often convey the opposite of what we mean to the animal. Here are three basic rules for the coexistence of man and dog.

A dog can interpret many of our signals correctly, but often we unconsciously give it the wrong message and then wonder about the animal's "strange" behavior. Or we misinterpret the animal's behavior, which inevitably leads to further misunderstandings. To avoid misunderstandings in the first place and to ensure that living together with a dog works, the following three basic rules should be consistently observed.

1. the whole family must participate

Especially for families, the following applies: Everyone must behave the same way towards the dog right from the start. If one allows something that the other forbids, this confuses and unsettles the dog unnecessarily. Initially, he no longer knows what he is allowed to do and will therefore choose the one he likes. Different rules also send the message that there is chaos in the pack or that the master and mistress do not have the family under control. This can lead to hierarchy problems later on because the dog thinks he has to take over the boss role.

2. accept the resting place of the dog

The sleeping place of the dog should be selected from the outset in such a way that the dog can be near the family, but still has its peace. Everyone should accept this area and not disturb him there if possible. Puppies should not be awakened when they are sleeping. They need sleep for their development and rest. Sleep also gives them security and confidence.

3. praise correctly

Proper praise is crucial when living with a dog. Be happy in a high voice and immediately when the dog shows the desired behavior. Praise can be given in various ways, for example verbally, as a caress, or with treats.

On the other hand, ignore the dog's misbehavior. Do not scold! For the dog, your negative attention is often to praise enough. If possible, do not pay attention to him when he does something he is not supposed to do, such as jumping up or begging. Otherwise, he will feel confirmed and repeat the behavior.
Of course, the education of the dog is also important, and this begins in puppyhood: because the owner must follow the golden rules of dog training not only in dog school but also in everyday life, so that man and animal can enjoy living together for a long time.
