IMPORTANT: Potatoes may only be fed to dogs peeled and cooked through.

Raw potatoes are toxic to dogs because of the solanine they contain and can cause diarrhea, inflammation of the mucous membranes, and severe cramps. Cooking causes much of the solanine to pass into the water. This makes potatoes tolerable and edible for dogs and humans. The cooking water must not be used under any circumstances!

Ideal alternative for allergies and intolerances.

Especially for dogs with allergies and intolerances (e.g. cereals), cooked potatoes are a good alternative. As a source of carbohydrates and protein, they are also popular in exclusion diets.

Potatoes are easily digestible

If your dog is sick with diarrhea or vomiting, potatoes are ideal for soothing the stomach. They are easy to digest and dogs also like them as puree or mash.

True energy suppliers for dogs

Potatoes are true energy suppliers for dogs! And this even though they consist of just under 80% water. The fat content is only about 0.1%. The potato is therefore often unjustifiably referred to as being unhealthy. The appropriate amount and preparation method makes the difference and should always be discussed with a veterinarian.

Ideal for pregnant bitches and puppies

The intake of digested, i.e. cooked, carbohydrates is particularly important for pregnant and lactating bitches. Home-cooked meals with potatoes or rice can be energy- and health-boosting for bitches and puppies during this phase.

How many potatoes can a dog eat?

Unless otherwise agreed with your veterinarian, however, potatoes should not be a daily part of your dog's diet! However, depending on the activity level, dishes with mashed potatoes and without spices can be prepared one to three times a week.
