6 exceptional dog breeds you should know about

Everyone probably knows what a poodle, a Dalmatian, or a German shepherd looks like. But beyond that, there is also a whole range of extraordinary dog breeds that are very special in one way or another. Below we present some chosen breeds, which are sure to leave a lasting impression.

1. the Czechoslovakian Wolfhound

That dogs are originated from wolves is common knowledge. For the Czechoslovakian Wolfhound, this is even a little more true than for his congeners. Because this unique dog breed is a cross between the Carpathian Wolf and the German Shepherd.

With a minimum shoulder height of 60 centimeters, the Czechoslovakian Wolfhound belongs to the larger dog breeds. Its appearance shows the relationship to the wolf quite clearly.

Although the initial strong character traits of the wolf have been largely bred out over time, the Czechoslovakian Wolfhound is not a dog for inexperienced owners. However, if raised with the necessary expertise, it proves to be a loyal companion.

2. the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua can not be missing from our list of amazing dog breeds. After all, these sweet four-legged friends, which are originally from Mexico, are the smallest dog breed in the entire world.

The weight of an adult Chihuahua is somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 kilograms and its height must not be more than 23 centimeters according to the breed standard. In some cases, even lighter animals are bred, although they should not be lighter than 500 grams.

Even though they are small, Chihuahuas, which come in both short-haired and long-haired varieties, are extremely courageous and tend to have a mind of their own. Those who choose one of the small four-legged friends should therefore not neglect their education.

3. the Irish Wolfhound

There are some exceptionally large breeds of dogs, the sight of which is likely to amaze many a person. After all, some specimens reach a shoulder height of over one meter, with which they tower over many a pony.

Usually, the Irish Wolfhound is considered the largest dog breed of all, although Great Danes and Saint Bernards, among others, can reach a similar size. Males regularly reach a shoulder height of 90 centimeters. Bitches, on the other hand, are somewhat smaller, as usual.

Due to the size of the Irish Wolfhound, the gentle giants need plenty of space and must be sufficiently exercised by their owners. Despite their still strongly pronounced hunting instinct, Irish Wolfhounds are, by the way, considered to be extremely affectionate.

4. the Mastiff

Another special breed of dog that we do not want to keep from you is the Mastiff. After all, this is generally considered to be the heaviest dog breed of all. On average, the massive quadrupeds weigh about 90 kilograms, although the weight can be significantly higher.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest Mastiff ever weighed in at over 150 kilograms, twice the weight of many adult males. Unfortunately, the high weight, which has been increasingly emphasized inbreeding over the years, also brings with it some health problems.

Those who decide to keep a Mastiff should note that in some states this unusual dog breed is a so-called list dog. Regardless, Mastiffs have a high irritability threshold and are considered peaceful family and companion dogs.

5. the Puli

You are convinced that there is no dog with dreadlocks? Then you do not know the Puli yet. This unusual dog breed originates from Hungary and would easily pass for a mop with its long, matted coat.

The Puli reaches a shoulder height of about 38 to 43 centimeters and a weight between 10 and 15 kilograms. Its most striking feature is undoubtedly its coat, which reaches down to the ground. It is the perfect protection from the cold for this breed, which was originally bred as a herding dog.

The Puli can indeed be kept as a family dog. However, its nature is entirely that of a herding dog. Mistrust of strangers and frequent barking are therefore often part of the normal behavior of these four-legged friends in everyday life.

6. the Chinese Crested

Another unusual dog breed that made it to our list because of its coat is the Chinese Crested. This breed is also available in a hairless version.

In this case, the hair growth is typically limited to the head, tail and paws of the animal. Opinions are divided on the appearance of the Chinese Crested. Of course, a dog without a real coat is not to everyone's taste.

Nevertheless, this unusual dog breed has long enjoyed increasing popularity in Germany, as evidenced by the increasing number of puppies for years. Who decides for a Chinese Crested Dog, can look forward to a playful and intelligent companion.
