In general A Golden Retriever can be kept outdoors. He has a double coat and his undercoat keeps him warm in winter and has a cooling effect in summer.
On the secured property and with a weatherproof doghouse, the stay outside is usually possible. The retriever can also be kept temporarily in a kennel. How the accommodation has to look, is regulated by law:
- Shelter obligatory
- The shelter must be dry, even in heavy rain.
- insulation important, so that the dog is warm in winter and protected from heat in summer.
- an additional shady place to lie outside
- heat-insulated floor
In no case should keeping outdoors be a permanent solution. The Golden Retriever is very people-oriented and should be a part of the family. He prefers to be near his people and should always be brought indoors at night, for example. Old and sick dogs also belong indoors, as do puppies. If there are extreme weather conditions outside, the four-legged friend is also brought inside.
However, keeping the dog on the property can be more interesting for the four-legged friend, for example, if you are on the road a lot during the day and he has to wait alone at home. Here, the dog can move freely, go to the toilet, observe its surroundings, etc. Ideally, at least two animals should be kept outside.
However, note the preferences of your retriever. While some prefer the yard, the securely fenced garden, or the kennel, others prefer the apartment or the house. Many dogs simply like to stay where their humans are and commute between home and yard.
Important: purebred dogs are quite likely to be stolen. The Golden Retriever is very friendly towards strangers. The property should be inaccessible to outsiders. Likewise, make sure it is escape-proof. Your Golden Retriever should not be able to run away.
Do you keep your Golden Retriever outside? What is his housing like? Kennel, garden, yard? Or is it out of the question for you to leave your Goldie outside? Leave a comment.
