When a puppy comes to live with you, everyday life radically changes. After all, you have to be there for your new roommate around the clock, particularly in the early days, and make sure that he wants for nothing. Of course, this also takes daily walks. When you can go for a walk with a puppy and how long your joint exploration tours should be, we explain to you in the following.

The most essentials at a glance

  • When moving into their new home, puppies are generally old enough to be taken for walks.

  • During growth, a duration of one minute per week of life is considered a guideline for walks with puppies.

  • Puppies need to be released about every two to three hours and taken out into the fresh air accordingly often.

  • Puppies should be accustomed to rules when walking early on to avoid problems later on.

When is it time for puppies' very first walks?

Due to the minimum legal age for delivery, your puppy is at least eight weeks old when you move in. Therefore, you can directly plan your first short walk and show your little four-legged friend the immediate surroundings.

However, you mustn't overdo it in the beginning. Because even if your puppy is old enough to go for a walk, your joint excursions must by no means be too long.

How long can you take puppies for walks?

In the first months of life, walks with the puppy must still be kept quite short. This also applies to breeds that normally have a high urge to move and therefore need a lot of exercise in adulthood.

As a rule of thumb, you can count on the duration of five minutes to a maximum of the number of weeks of life in minutes. For example, if your puppy is 10 weeks old, you should walk him for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time.

This may sound short to you, but it is usually quite enough for your young four-legged friend during growth. After all, physical overload in puppyhood can make itself felt later on with health problems, such as joint diseases.

Instead of extended walks, we, therefore, recommend that you provide sufficient exercise by playing together, if necessary.
